Lawmakers have begun to demand that President Joe Biden either resign or face impeachment over the White House’s bungled exit from Afghanistan.
Representative Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., has co-sponsored articles of impeachment against President Biden after what he refers to as a “foreign policy failure” in the war-torn Middle Eastern country.
Duncan co-sponsored the articles of impeachment against Biden after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., filed articles last week. In a statement, Duncan said that it was time to remove Biden because of his “gross negligence” that “resulted in a grave humanitarian crisis” with the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.
“I am heartsick at the President’s failure to fulfill his duty that has resulted in American deaths and thousands of Americans and Afghan allies being abandoned at the risk of being tortured, captured, held hostage, or killed at the hands of the Taliban or other terrorist forces.
“Our Commander-in-Chief showed reckless disregard for both American citizens and allies in neglecting to secure their safe evacuation from Afghanistan once he withdrew our troops,” Duncan said.
“The President promised to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, but it is evident the President has failed to fulfill this charge.”
For his part, Duncan insists that he did not take the decision lightly, and it “saddens” him to have to take the action he did.
Greene celebrated Duncan’s support, saying it was “time for Congress to hold this administration accountable.”
Greene recently introduced three impeachment resolutions calling for Biden’s removal from office. It enumerated several issues, including the chaotic withdrawal of the U.S. military presence from Afghanistan.
Outrage grows
Freshman congresswoman Greene accused Biden of “dereliction of duty” after the Taliban’s takeover.
She also alleged he “failed to secure the extraction of thousands of American civilians and Afghan Allies” as well as “armed our enemies” for abandoning U.S. military equipment in Afghanistan, including helicopters and munitions.
Although the articles initially appeared unlikely to gain any traction in Congress, the recent suicide bombing, which killed 13 service members at the Kabul airport, has bolstered support for impeachment.
Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., a Navy veteran, tweeted, “Instead of making sure Americans and our troops are safe in Afghanistan, the President spent countless hours this week twisting Congressional arms to vote for his $5 trillion tax and spend plans. Unbelievable. Resign.”
“President Biden’s failure to have a well-planned conditions-based withdrawal from Afghanistan has put American troops and citizens in harm’s way and has now cost the lives of at least twelve U.S. service members. He should be impeached,” tweeted Representative Diana Harshbarger, R-Tenn.
Senator Josh Hawley, R-Mo., called for Biden to resign after what he called a “sickening” event.
Senator Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., also spoke out along with Hawley, saying that Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley “should all resign or face impeachment and removal from office.”
